Online Distance Program with Concierge-Access Mentoring

T

he more tools in our toolbox, the better a job we can generally do. The right tool for the right job and all that.

But webinars all by themselves don’t always translate into clinically-useful skills.

What’s needed is good training in the practical application of what we learn. Everything changes when we move from the conference room into the clinic.

The best way to do that is to have an experienced mentor. One-on-one training where we get expert guidance in how to best use our new tools as we put them to work.

That kind of support used to be expensive.

It’s not any more. It’s time.

Sunday, Sept. 30, 1pm:
Basic Micronutrients Plus

$179

A very long time ago I discovered that I got dramatically better results from my acupuncture if I made sure my patients were taking a set of very specific Basic Micronutrients: things like minerals (in the right form), B vitamins, EFAs and antioxidants. We start the series with a review of the Basics … because they’re the single most important & simple thing I’ve found to make the most reliable difference in people’s lives.

  • Full one-month concierge clinical mentoring access – details above
  • Learn how and why crucial cofactors and elements are missing from modern diets and what to do about it.
  • Why mineral deficiencies accelerate heavy metal accumulations.
  • Why the best mineral supplement is also the cheapest.
  • Methylated or non-methylated Bs? Check family history.
  • Common methylation snafus and how to steer clear of them.
  • Special advice for vegans and vegetarians
  • The best omega-3 for vegans and vegetarians
  • Vitamin C: immune booster, raw material for connective tissue.
  • Advanced nutrients: Intro to glutathione & specialized antioxidants
  • The Genova Organix lab: Window into mitochondrial function.

Sunday, Oct. 21, 1pm
Inflammation & Immunity

$179

A key concept in the new medicine is the way modern industrialized food and urban environments expose us to toxins that keep our immune systems in a constant state of quiet alarm. This ages us prematurely and sets the stage for all the chronic diseases of aging, including common thyroid issues.

  • Full one-month concierge clinical mentoring access – details above
  • Innate immunity vs. adaptive immunity. How we can all calm the fires within.
  • Understanding molecular mimicry. Even more important: how to explain it.
  • Intro to Leaky Gut and Leaky Brain.
  • Why we crave the things that inflame us.
  • Assessing inflammation labs

Sunday, November 11, 1pm:
Functional Mental Health

$179

The brain is two-percent of the body’s weight but uses twenty-percent of the body’s energy. That’s why any issues with metabolism, inflammation or nutrient deficiencies tend to show up first in mood and behavior.

  • Full one-month concierge clinical mentoring access – details above
  • Inflammation’s connection to a broad range of psychopathology.
  • Sickness behavior: mood disorders similarity to flu-induced behaviors.
  • Amino acid therapy: the neurotransmitter deficiency theory. Why it can work.
  • How gut health affects mental health
  • The crucial role of B vitamins
  • Vitamin C: Nature’s Ambien

Sunday, December 9, 1pm:
Adrenals & Hormones

$179

Healing stressed adrenals is key to resetting our endocrine balance and all the other body systems our hormones control. The adrenals make progesterone, the raw material for all our sex hormones. And because they control the circadian cortisol rhythms, their influence on sleep and alertness can have such a disintegrating effect on metabolic function that little else will work until this is stabilized.

  • Full one-month concierge clinical mentoring access – details above
  • The different stages of adrenal exhaustion and why everyone has a different number.
  • Recognizing the various stages; explaining adrenal fatigue dynamics to patients
  • The role of adaptogens in stabilizing adrenal function
  • Adrenals like to be boring: the role of a ritualized way of life in stabilizing adrenal function
  • Adrenal supporting eating patterns
  • Vitamin C and the adrenals
  • Intro to hormone balancing
  • Special vegetarian and vegan considerations.

Sunday, January 27, 1pm:
The Gut & Microbiome; Sugar & Stress

$179

Refined sugar as we know it today was too expensive for most people until the 1890s, when the invention of modern machinery made it cheap and ubiquitous. Society has still failed to recover from the shock, not to mention our poor sugar addicts.

  • Full one-month concierge clinical mentoring access – details above
  • Learn why sugar is the first gateway drug.
  • Learn how to use the Sugar Cure: a special amino acid that kills sweet tooths reliably.
  • How sugar distorts gut health
  • How sugar and an unhealthy microbiome impact mental health
  • Leaky gut: its causes and cures
  • Restoring a healthy microbiome: growing a new forest takes time.
  • The role of adrenals in gut health

Sunday, February 10, 1pm:
Metabolic Detoxification

$179

The solution to pollution has been dilution for hundreds of years. Today, we can feel the effects in our own bodies. More often than not, treatment-resistant cases, and especially people who are very sensitive to needling, are in dire need of nutritional and supplementation support for their Phase I and Phase II detox pathways

  • Full one-month concierge clinical mentoring access – details above
  • Intro to Phase I detox: piling all the trash into trash cans and leaving them at the curb.
  • Common toxic vectors and clinical patterns that suggest them
  • How toxic body burdens impact mental health
  • Intro to Phase II detox: taking the trash to the dump.
  • Nutrients that feed Phase I & Phase II detox
  • Intro to Detox genetics: Quick nutrient challenge assessment tools that suggest common patterns.
  • How to design a detox that works. Keyword: very gently.
  • What to do when a detox goes south
  • Labs for assessing toxic body burdens

Sunday, March 3, 1pm:
Ordering & Reading Functional Labs

$179

A big attraction of the functional model is the availability of a wide range of labs offering more or less objective data we can use to fine tune our understanding of a case while targeting our interventions more precisely. This month we focus on a few of the most useful:

  • Full one-month concierge clinical mentoring access – details above
  • Biohealth 4/5 point adrenal hormone test
  • Genova Organix panel
  • Helpful markers on standard bloodwork
  • Labs the patient can ask their doc for and why
  • The best gut health panels
  • Functional thyroid testing patients can do at home.

Sunday, March 24, 1pm:
Applied Functional Genetics

$179

21st century science lights the way as we take a tour of some of the most common genetic SNPs that set the stage for chronic disease. Formerly known as “mutations,” SNP – Single Nucleotide Polymorphism. This term has come into vogue as it’s become more broadly recognized that genes outside the norm often confer benefits as well as costs.

  • Full one-month concierge clinical mentoring access – details above
  • Detox Genes: MTHFR, MTRR, CBS
  • Genes affecting neurotransmitters: MAO, COMT
  • The Genetic Testing World: Testing Services & Analytics
  • Security Concerns
  • Talking about genetics: a roadmap out of dysfunction, not a death sentence.
  • Nutrient and food interventions tailored to specific genetic SNPs

Sunday, April 28, 1pm:
Food as Medicine

$179

While supplements offer a degree of precision foods cannot, informed food choices are the foundation of functional medicine success. All the nutrient pills in the world can’t compensate for a bottom-feeding Standard American Diet. No program of supplementation, no matter how well-informed and carefully designed, can take the place of a clean, nourishing diet. At the same time, it can be easier to get someone to change their religion than change their favorite foods. Which is a shame, because it’s often the comfort foods we’re addicted to that end up inflaming and aging us if they don’t first drive us insane.

  • Full one-month concierge clinical mentoring access – details above
  • Simple ways to tell the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods.
  • Patient and client resources: education is key.
  • The use of metaphor and imagery in getting across the importance of clean food.
  • Why organic diets are crucial today.
  • How to source reasonably-priced organic food.
  • Eating the Rainbow: a great way to better energy and mental health
  • Saturated fats: crucial for the brain and hormones. The devil turned out to be missing from the details.
  • Vegan and Vegetarian Special Needs
  • Spotting and Helping the Carboholic
  • Oils and Fats: Healthy & Not-So-Much
  • Blood Type Diets
  • Paleo Diets
  • The Oligoantigenic Diet
  • SIBO Diets
  • Why dieting as a weight-loss strategy is unclear on the concept

Sunday, May 19, 1pm:
Clinical Application: Case Studies & Advanced Topics I

At this point in our journey it’s time to start putting our new knowledge to work. This month and next we analyze live cases drawn from our work and design testing and intervention programs for them. Duane will reach deep into his databases to dig out fascinating functional medicine clinical pearls to share.

Sunday, June 9, 1pm:
Clinical Application: Case Studies & Advanced Topics II

We continue last month’s focus on putting our new knowledge to work. Duane takes requests re: which advanced topics to prioritize. Students rehearse the presentations they’ll be giving for the final exam.

Sunday, June 30, 1pm:
Clinical Application: Case Presentations & Final Exam

The final is a case presentation with questions from the rest of the group. Duane will comment on each of the cases and we’ll take group voice votes to decide who graduates.
