UNDERSTANDING LONG COVID ANXIETY & DEPRESSION

Building Client Agency When the Science is Still Emerging

The most frightening thing about Long COVID is how little medical science knows about it.

Fortunately this is beginning to change. Even while there’s still no lab test that can document it and diagnosis is clinical, a range of investigators and researchers have identified several different metabolic dynamics underpinning the syndrome. This is allowing cutting-edge clinicians to begin to treat it successfully, especially if they have informed clients ready and willing to do their part.

But for those who aren’t aware of this work and wondering what to do about their fatigue, inability to concentrate, insomnia, extreme anxiety, depression and fatigue … and why their regular docs can’t help them … the situation can be terrifying indeed.

We’ll review the areas researchers are exploring with respect to how the metabolic dynamics associated with Long COVID can generate or exacerbate pre-existing anxious or depressive morphologies 1,2,3 and examine the nutrient-based interventions scientists suspect can ease these symptoms.4,5,6,7

Educating clients about what the emerging science tells us (while debunking unsupported claims and observing scope-of-practice boundaries) can ease client concerns by giving them a renewed sense of agency. Pointing them toward reputable, evidence-based resources can also be invaluable.

Being prepared to engage in conversations about the work being done in this area can position you as an informed professional one step ahead of the rest.

  • Understanding pleiotropy: a concept key to addressing chronic illness
  • How Long COVID contributes to anxiety & depression, and what we can all do about it.

This course focuses on:

  • current understandings of Long COVID: pleiotropic overlapping pathological issues and how they create anxious & depressive symptoms
  • functional nutrition approaches to addressing these issues
  • resources for professional and patient education
  • patient centered-care vs treating disease

Goals & Objectives:

Students who complete this course successfully will:

  • Be able to name and accurately describe four metabolic pathways creating Long COVID symptoms,
  • Be able to accurate describe functional nutrition approaches addressing each one,
  • Name three publicly available resources to which they can refer patients for education purposes and offer a critique of at least one of them.
